🌿 Devotional: The Potter’s Purpose

"But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’"
— Romans 9:20 (NIV)

🏺 Parable of the Master Craftsman and the Workshop

In a quiet countryside, there was a master craftsman who ran a workshop where he made clay vessels. Each one was shaped with care — no two the same. Some were polished cups, used at royal banquets. Others were heavy jugs, used to carry water in the heat of the day. A few were even shaped to hold oil for burning lamps during dark nights.

One day, the vessels began to whisper among themselves:

  • The polished cup said, “I’m more important — look how I shine in the king’s hall!”

  • The water jug groaned, “Why must I carry such weight and get scraped by stones?”

  • A cracked oil lamp muttered, “I’m flawed… why did the craftsman even make me?”

But that night, a terrible storm struck the village. The power went out, and fear filled the air.

The master craftsman entered his home and lit the cracked oil lamp, and its tiny flame filled the room with light. Then he washed with water from the jug and poured tea into the polished cup. Each vessel served a purpose — exactly when it was needed.

The next day, the craftsman gathered his vessels and said:

“You do not understand the full purpose for which you were made. The banquet needs beauty, the field needs strength, and the darkness needs light. I shaped you for a time, for a reason, for a moment you may not yet see.”

And the cracked oil lamp whispered in peace, “Even my flaw was used for light.

🔍 Reflection: What Kind of Vessel Am I?

We often compare ourselves to others:

  • “Why is their life easier?”

  • “Why do I suffer?”

  • “Why am I not more talented, or more visible?”

But Romans 9 reminds us: God is the Potter, and we are the clay. His purposes are greater than our understanding. What seems like weakness may be where His strength shines brightest.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
— 2 Corinthians 12:9

🙏 Prayer

“Lord, help me trust Your design. Shape me into a vessel that brings You glory — even when I don’t understand my purpose or the path I walk. Use my flaws, my struggles, and my strength to shine Your light. Amen.”
