✝️ Devotional: Where Did Jesus Go for Three Days?

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
— Matthew 12:40 (NIV)

📜 The Mystery of the Three Days

After His death on the cross, Jesus’ body was laid in a tomb — but where did His spirit go?

Many believers wonder:

  • Did He go to hell?

  • Did He suffer more?

  • Did He rest or fight a battle?

Let’s look at what Scripture tells us.

🔥 He Descended into the Lower Parts of the Earth

He also descended to the lower, earthly regions... to lead captives in His train.
— Ephesians 4:9–10

Jesus descended into the realm of the dead — called Sheol (Hebrew) or Hades (Greek). It was not the lake of fire or the final hell (Gehenna), but the place of the departed, both righteous and unrighteous, awaiting judgment or redemption.

🕊️ Paradise and the Righteous Dead

In Luke 23:43, Jesus said to the thief on the cross:

“Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”

This paradise is often understood to be the “Abraham’s Bosom” described in Luke 16:22, a comforted place for the righteous dead who awaited the Messiah’s victory.

🛡️ What Did Jesus Do There?

  • Proclaimed Victory

He went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits.

— 1 Peter 3:19

Jesus declared His triumph over sin, death, and the powers of darkness. He didn’t suffer — He announced that the battle was won.

  • Defeated the Power of Death

Through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death—that is, the devil.”
— Hebrews 2:14

  • Took the Keys of Death and Hades

I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
— Revelation 1:18

  • Set the Captives Free

When He ascended on high, He took many captives and gave gifts to His people.
— Ephesians 4:8

Jesus released the righteous dead, leading them out of captivity into heavenly freedom.

⬆️ Then He Rose — and Ascended

On the third day, Jesus rose in glory and power, appearing to many over 40 days (Acts 1:3). He later ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19), where He now intercedes for us (Romans 8:34).

🔍 Summary of the Three Days

  • Day 1 (Friday) - Crucified and died, spirit descends to Sheol

  • Day 2 (Saturday) - Proclaims victory, releases the righteous captives

  • Day 3 (Sunday) - Rises from the dead, appears to His disciples

🧠 Analogy: Rescuing Hostages

Imagine a hero storming into a prison where captives are kept in chains.
He defeats the oppressor, unlocks every door, announces freedom, and leads them out.
That’s what Jesus did — not in weakness, but in power.

🙏 Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for going to the depths to rescue the righteous and defeat death. Thank You that You hold the keys, that no power in hell can prevail over You. Help me to walk in the freedom You won during those three days. I trust You, my risen Savior and King. Amen.”
