🔥 Devotional: Faith, the Spirit, and the War Within

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
— Romans 8:2 (NKJV)

⚖️ No Longer Under the Law — But Under Grace

For centuries, God's people lived under the Law of Moses — a system of rules that revealed God’s holiness but also humanity’s inability to meet it. The law was good, but it couldn’t make people righteous. It exposed sin, but couldn’t remove it.

Then came Jesus.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus fulfilled the law — perfectly and completely — so that we are no longer justified by works, but by faith.

A person is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.
— Galatians 2:16

The Law of the Spirit vs. The Law of Sin and Death

When we trust in Christ, something radical happens: the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us. And with Him comes a new law — not written on stone, but written on our hearts:

I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.
— Hebrews 10:16

This is the law of the Spirit of life, which:

  • Sets us free from the condemnation of sin.

  • Empowers us to walk in love, purity, and truth.

  • Changes our desires from the inside out.

But even as believers, we still feel the battle…

⚔️ The Two Laws Within Us

Paul describes a spiritual war in Romans 7 — a tug-of-war between:

  • The law of sin in our flesh (our old nature), and

  • The law of God now alive in our spirit through Christ.

I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
— Romans 7:21

This conflict is not a sign of failure — it’s proof that the Spirit is alive in you. The struggle shows that you are no longer at peace with sin.

Victory comes not by self-effort, but by walking in the Spirit:

Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
— Galatians 5:16

🙏 Prayer

“Father, thank You for setting me free from the law of sin and death. Fill me with Your Spirit. Help me to walk not by the flesh, but by faith — trusting Your power within me to overcome every temptation. Teach me to live by the law of love, written on my heart. Amen.”

📝 Reflection Questions

  1. Do you ever try to earn God’s approval through works or performance?

  2. Where do you sense the war between flesh and Spirit in your daily life?

  3. How can you grow in walking by faith and not striving in the flesh?

💡 Final Thought

The old law shows us our sin.
The new law — the law of the Spirit — shows us Jesus.
And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17).

You are no longer a slave to sin, nor a prisoner to performance.
You are a child of God, led by His Spirit, growing in His grace.
